About our Cottage
Carmel was once the head gardener's cottage to the impressive East Dene Estate home in Victorian times to the celebrated poet Algernon Swinburne. The cottage faces due south with spectacular sea views from both inside and the surrounding gardens. Climb the paths behind the house to reveal further secluded terraces with panoramic sea views.
Full of charm, Carmel has been furnished in a coastal style to compliment many of its original features, hand carved fireplaces with wood burner, original floorboards and high attic ceilings. The galley style kitchen has dual views and cottage windows. A separate dining room opens onto the living space which looks out over the gardens. Cosy in the winter with the woodburner or refreshing in the summer with the garden doors open onto the lawn.
Inside the Retreat
Style & Rooms
The Cottage has three bedrooms, each with its own unique charm, and easily sleeping eight.
Upstairs, 2 large double bedrooms overlook the surrounding countryside with seaviews to the east and west. High ceilings and open beams create space and light the bedrooms rooms and hallway. The childrens room has three single beds with an optional pull out if further sleeping is required. The bathroom is also spacious with a bath, shower, wc and wash basin.
The third bedroom is located towards the back of the property overlooking the garden. Stripped floorboards, minister style stone fireplace and tongue and groove paneling all enhance the open, airy atmosphere. This room has an en suite shower-room accessible through the adjacent utility room.
Outside the Cottage
Gardens
Relax in the terrace gardens and enjoy the sound of the ocean.
Our ever evolving gardens fit perfectly between the charming nature of the cottage and their magical setting between sea, sky and nature.
The lower gardens surrounding the property are a great place for children to explore and play. Numerous terraces enable you to enjoy a spectacular seaview and absorb the sun from early in the morning well into the evening. The new deck near the lounge entrance has incredible views looking out over the gardens, clifftop and out to sea.

What a lovely little cottage
What a lovely little cottage, so cosy and warm with brilliant views. We were so lucky with the October weather that we only lit the log fire once. The sunrise was amazing to see each morning. We didn’t want for anything, just perfect. A 2 minute walk down to the beach as well where we had a paddle and lovely walks into Ventnor one way and Shanklin the other way
Beautiful, beautiful cottage
We stayed for five nights recently and had a wonderful winter break. The cottage is warm, well equipped and so close to lovely walks.(which my sausage dogs appreciated!). Would love to come back again in the summer months to enjoy the terrace and garden. Many thanks, Penny x
